Overview

In Africa, there is a very special word imprinted on the hearts of its people – Ubuntu – meaning “humanity to others”.  This special 14-day itinerary celebrates this principle by bringing your family together on a journey that will unite you in wonder, allowing for reflection on the ancient African proverb – “We desire to bequeath two things to our children; the first one is roots, the other one is wings.”

As together you experience some of the country’s premier highlights, each of you will experience the transformational magic of the country – its culture, its diversity, its heritage, and its endless iterations of natural beauty.

You will be hosted at some of the country’s finest establishments, situated in both bustling urban and tranquil wilderness surrounds.  Our dedicated staff will ensure that the precious time you spend with your family is a balanced mix of exploration and exhalation, of vistas and reflections, of adrenaline and meditation, of a sated wanderlust and a deeper appreciation of that place where each of us can find a home – the family.

Amongst South Africa’s diverse array of attractions, we’ve found that visitors are most intrigued by her history, her culture, and her breath-taking natural heritage.  Your itinerary has been curated for you to experience each of these facets in a manner that is relaxing, comfortable, and facilitates togetherness.  Indeed, the shared memories of festive meals together in exotic locales, the collective awe at witnessing wild animals – both on land and at sea – in their natural environments, and the endless parade of mind-blowing sunsets are practically tailor-made to bring you closer together, yet leave you each uniquely changed.

As we say in Africa, “If you want to go fast, go alone.  If you want to go far, go together”.

Highlights

Cape Town

On arrival at Cape Town International Airport, you will be met by our representative and escorted to the opulent Cape Grace, located at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront on the harbors’ edge, where you’ll spend the evening at leisure.

Towering over the city, Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain and adjacent Signal Hill are the first stops on a tour of the city.  Having oriented yourself from these lofty heights and witnessed the firing of the Noon Day Gun, you’ll descend into the City Bowl, where your guide will expand on colonial-era history.

You’ll get to browse the charming market at Greenmarket Square, where the treasures are found in both the souvenirs and the local characters you’ll encounter.  The nearby Company Gardens are a place of quiet reflection – established to replenish passing ships dating back to 1644.

From there, you’ll drive past the Houses of Parliament, Castle of Good Hope and the Slave Lodge – en route to the fascinating Bo-Kaap – or Malay Quarter.  Established in the 1760’s, the flamboyant houses bear testimony to the joy of emancipated slaves that later settled in the area.

Cape Grace Hotel

Cape Town

Refreshed after an evening in the luxurious Cape Grace Hotel, today’s highlights are found on a winding journey around the scenic Cape Peninsula.

First off, your wanderlust will be tempted in the coastal enclaves of Clifton and Camp’s Bay.  Home to some of South Africa’s most popular beaches, you’ll be entranced by the cool blue waters and shores adorned with fashionable eateries frequented by the who’s who of Cape Town society.

From here the grandiose landscape takes over as the star attraction, heading south along the spectacular coastal road to the quaint fishing village of Hout Bay.  Next, you traverse the jaw-dropping Chapman’s Peak Drive, which hugs the sheer mountainside above the sparkling waters of the cold Atlantic.

After a visit to the southern tip of the peninsula at Cape Point, your journey winds down via the cacophony of the rare African Penguin colony in Simon’s Town, before being returned to the comforts and leisure of the hotel.

Cape Winelands

In the late 17th century, a group of religious refugees known as the Huguenots fled France, in search of a new home where they could practice their faith free from persecution.  Some sought passage to the Dutch colony at the southern tip of the African continent.  Eventually, they settled among the towering Cape fold mountains in a verdant valley of fertile soils and cold, clear streams.

With their arrival, they brought French viniculture to Africa, as they tamed the land with names that hark back to renowned wine regions of France – La Cotte, Cabrière, La Provence.  Here too evolved the distinctive Cape Dutch architecture, of which many examples may still be found in one of South Africa’s oldest towns – Franschhoek, translated from the Dutch “French Corner”.

You’ll learn more of the local history on a visit to the French Huguenot Museum and Memorial.  A stroll through the village unveils a wealth of heritage and French joie de vivre.  Exploring further afield, visit some of Africa’s pre-eminent wine estates, and treat your palate to some of the finest cuisines the world over.

Le Quartier Francais

Cape Winelans

After a relaxing night in a French-styled inn, a day of epicurean exploration awaits.  The first stop is the incredible Spice Route Winery.  Here a collective of 13 artisanal masters display their offerings in a sumptuous display of cuisine-culture and craft.

Choose from homemade single-origin chocolates, sample the local wine cultivars, draw a draught of craft beer, decide on decadent deli treats, and browse the handcrafted curios unique to the region.  You may also collect a piece of bespoke glassware that has been blown right before your eyes.

Snapping out of this mouth-watering reverie, the day proceeds to the Le Bonheur Crocodile Farm, where you will ponder these Mesozoic relics that time forgot.  You might even decide to pick up a designer crocodile skin bag or pair of cowboy boots at the on-site shop.

A wine tasting at the renowned Spier Wine Estate rounds off the delicacies of the day, and a visit to the Eagle Encounter rehabilitation center will surely have your spirits soaring as you are surrounded and entertained by some of Africa’s most beautiful raptors.

Time now to reflect on all you have seen, heard, tasted, breathed, and felt – as you return to the sumptuous comforts of Le Quartier Francais, at the midpoint of your African adventure.

Le Quartier Francais

Kruger National Park

Bid farewell to the fairest Cape as you head north for the next leg of your African experience.  After breakfast, you head to Cape Town International Airport, to be flown via domestic carrier to Johannesburg.  You will then fly by light aircraft directly to your final – and for some, the most exciting – destination on the itinerary.

Come nightfall you will be astounded at how you have been transported from the hustle and bustle of modern Africa, right into the heart of its primal wilderness.  You will hear sounds you might only have heard in wildlife documentaries You will see night skies spoken of by poets and latter-day explorers.  You will inhale air that has your lungs rejoice at its purity. You will taste true adventurous freedom.  And you will never, ever feel the same again.  As author Brian Jackman once quipped, “Everything in Africa bites, the safari bug is worst of all.”

Welcome to Ngala Tented Camp – in the heart of the Greater Kruger National Park – and your home for the remaining four nights in Africa.  The largest contiguous conservation area in the country, it is home to an astounding array of fauna and flora.  And at Ngala, you will soon fall into its sultry rhythm, where understated luxury and raw beauty collude to enrich your appreciation for life and all its constituents.

Ngala Tented Camp

Kruger National Park

Aptly named, Ngala – which is the local Tsonga word for lion – is located within a vast wilderness of the Greater Kruger National Park; revered as the home of a multitude of predators, and the species upon which their survival depends.

In keeping with this theme of interdependence, Ngala Tented Camp leads the way in offering the conscientious traveler a safari experience loyal to the camp’s core values of “Care of the Land, Wildlife, and People”.  Guests are accommodated in sumptuously appointed, elevated safari tents which overlook the Timbavati riverbed and adjacent floodplain.

Your bush experience will be hosted by an experienced ranger/tracker team dedicated to interpreting the sights and sounds of the surrounding environment and its inhabitants.  Game drives depart in the cooler morning and afternoon hours, when both predators and prey are most active, sometimes extending well into spot-lit darkness.  These offer the opportunity to witness animal behavior in a manner that aspires to be non-invasive, informative, and exhilarating.

For an even more grounding experience, accompany your armed guide on foot investigating animal spoor, identifying birds by call or sight, and learning of the magico-medicinal uses of the indigenous plants.  Enthusiasts can take this experience to an even greater level on a pre-booked Specialist Walking Safari.
