Samburu National Park | Kenya

The barren, open wilderness of the Samburu National Reserve is home to Kenya’s vast northern drylands. Snaking through this arid landscape like a fat, glistening serpent is the Ewaso Nyiro River, attracting hordes of wildlife to its acacia and palm-fringed banks to drink and seek cover as it winds its way towards the Lorian Swamp.

Scraggy ridges dominate the rugged landscape, alongside massive ‘other-worldly’ rock formations that create an eerie and ethereal atmosphere. The razor-like ‘Koitogor’ seems to rise like a phoenix from the ashes of the escarpment to simply disappear again once you move around it, while the impressive mesa-structure of ‘Ol Olokwe’ stands like a sentinel at the ‘gateway to Northern Kenya.’

Permanently sprouting fresh water are the Buffalo springs on the southern side of the river, and it’s an excellent place to spot game coming to drink, the occasional croc and odd slinking predator. Explore this region with Magical Africa on guided safari drives or walking safaris with expert trackers and take home some lasting memories.
