Kilimanjaro National Park

Known as the ‘Mountain of Light,’ Kilimanjaro is often seen as a ‘metaphor for the compelling beauty of East Africa.’ Drawing adventurers from around the world to climb its snowy peaks to touch the ‘roof of Africa,’

Kilimanjaro, also known as Uhuru Peak, is one of the world’s most accessible high summits. The lower slopes are also home to the two of the main tribes in the area, the Maasai, and the Chagga. Further up, dense forests inhabited by elusive elephant, leopard, buffalo and the endangered Abbot’s duiker transform into scrub-covered moorlands, while further up the slopes, the terrain becomes an alpine desert. Finally, the landscape gives way to a wintery white world of ice and snow and the very rooftop of Africa and the twin summits of Kibo and Mawenzi. The western side of Kilimanjaro features the third volcanic cone, Shira and the magnificent beauty of the roof of the continent.

One of Tanzania’s most visited parks, Mt Kilimanjaro National Park draws more than 25,000 adventurers and trekkers each year to take to her slopes and summit the famous 5896-meter peak, which can be done by walking without ropes or technical climbing experience. As one of the world’s most accessible high summits, a good walking stick, proper clothing and a bit of determination should get you to the top of Gillman’s Point on Uhuru Peak – however, there is so much more to this majestic mountain that her summit – the spectacular scenery along the way is breath-taking.
