Overview - Family African Safari

In Africa, there is a very special word imprinted on the hearts of its people – Ubuntu – meaning “humanity to others”.  This special 14-day itinerary celebrates this principle by bringing your family together on a journey that will unite you in wonder, allowing for reflection on the ancient African proverb – “We desire to bequeath two things to our children; the first one is roots, the other one is wings.”

Indulge in a transformative Family African Safari, where the magic of South Africa’s premier highlights unfolds. Experience the country’s rich culture, diversity, heritage, and endless natural beauty as your family immerses in shared adventures and unforgettable moments.

You will be hosted at some of the country’s finest establishments, situated in both bustling urban and tranquil wilderness surrounds.  Our dedicated staff will ensure that the precious time you spend with your family is a balanced mix of exploration and exhalation, of vistas and reflections, of adrenaline and meditation, of a sated wanderlust and a deeper appreciation of that place where each of us can find a home – the family.

Amongst South Africa’s diverse array of attractions, we’ve found that visitors are most intrigued by her history, her culture, and her breath-taking natural heritage.  Your itinerary has been curated for you to experience each of these facets in a manner that is relaxing, comfortable, and facilitates togetherness.  Indeed, the shared memories of festive meals together in exotic locales, the collective awe at witnessing wild animals – both on land and at sea – in their natural environments, and the endless parade of mind-blowing sunsets are practically tailor-made to bring you closer together, yet leave you each uniquely changed.

As we say in Africa, “If you want to go fast, go alone.  If you want to go far, go together”.

Atholplace House & Villa

Madikwe Game Reserve

Invigorated after a sumptuous breakfast, you will be transferred to Lanseria Airport to depart for your first family African safari destination, reached by a short private charter.  The malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve is located in the semi-arid northwest and the Morukuru River provides the lifeblood of this 74,000-hectare protected wilderness.  Home to the Big 5, an abundance of endemic African wildlife roam free across the vast expanse.  On the banks of the river, set in the cool riparian forest, lies Morukuru River House.

On landing, your Ranger will transfer you to the lodge, where you will meet your host; there to ensure your stay is as unforgettable as the natural beauty that surrounds you.  Sensitive to its surroundings, Morukuru River House was designed with your absolute comfort a foremost priority.  Fully air-conditioned, it is constructed of a tasteful blend of stone, timber and thatch.  An extensive entertainment system is available, – although we are sure that it is in the novel surroundings that the attention of the whole family will be rapt.  The design lends itself to a natural flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces, with an expansive deck and sparkling swimming pool.  The House Chef will keep you well provided for and is even on hand to share secret recipes of any of the meals you will enjoy.

Daily wildlife activities are led by your highly qualified Ranger, including open-vehicle safaris at your leisure.  You’ll also be invited to take to the wilds on foot, for a more intimate bush experience.  Go fishing, enjoy some pampering at the spa or spend an unforgettable night in the hide.

Phinda Game Reserve

After breakfast, you will depart via private charter for a flight to your next family African safari locale- the exceptional &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in the sub-tropical east of the country.  Your Ranger is waiting to whisk you to the exclusive Phinda Homestead.

Phinda (meaning return) was founded in the early 1990s when visionary conservationists procured unproductive farmlands with a dream of returning them to their pristine best.  Thus was born what is now a near-30,000 hectare reserve.  Renowned for the multitude of habitats that support the widest diversity of wildlife and birds found in the country.  Aside from the Big 5, endemic wildlife abounds.  It is one of the few places where you can go snorkeling in the morning and watch predators stalk at nightfall.

At The Homestead, the service is attentive and discreet.  Offering farm-style living, with a luxurious twist, the villa comprises decadently comfortable en-suite rooms and an open entertainment area leading onto timber decks and a rim-flow swimming pool.  A Chef is on hand to curate unforgettable menus.

Phinda Homestead offers an amazing selection of activities.  Should the kids need a little time away from their parents, they can set off on exciting fishing or tracking expeditions in the care of your Ranger.  They might even slightly alter the appearance of your private safari vehicle in a painting experiment.

Standard safari tradition dictates twice-daily game drives in the cooler morning and evening hours.  However, at Phinda there is so much more on offer; how about a trip to a remote beach where you can snorkel safe, shallow reefs?  Or maybe you’d like to track wildlife on foot.  Or participate in conservation activities like Pangolin-tagging.  The choices seem as endless as the memories with which you’ll leave.

The elegant manor house, built in the unique Cape Dutch style, pays homage to the grand traditions of yesteryear, where opulence meets African hospitality.  It is situated on a coffee estate, a short distance from the renowned Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area, which you will visit for your safari activities.

Inside the manor house, you will find a blend of Afro-European decor, lavishly overlaid on plush furnishings that evince refinement and attention to detail.  Fine dining is the order of the day in the stylish restaurant, while the various public spaces invite socializing with your fellow guests – whether in the cozy lounge or outdoors on the spacious veranda overlooking manicured garden

Accommodation at the estate is provided in beautiful cottages, each with a private entrance and sun terrace.  Within, you will be ensconced in spacious comfort, with stylish dark wooden furnishings arranged around a central fireplace.  The en-suite bathroom boasts a Victorian ball & claw bath, double vanity, and a soothing ‘rainfall’ shower.

Your arrival coincides with the manor’s traditional high-tea, taken on the veranda.  After settling in, enjoy a sumptuous dinner, perhaps followed by a game of billiards, before retiring for the night.

Beyond Phinda Homestead

With sheer mountains rising on your left and the cold Atlantic stretching off on the right, you literally won’t know where to look.  Your pilot will point out ever more landmarks as you round the peninsula, then head inland towards Franschhoek.

Cape Town

The final two days are a time to come together, both to reflect on the preceding fortnight, and to gather yourself in preparation for your return home.  That’s not to say the fun and adventure is over, for there is plenty that Cape Town and its surroundings offer for those with boundless energy.

Your luxurious base while in the Mother City is the prestigious One&Only Cape Town, perched regally alongside a private marina.  The hotel is centrally located, ensuring easy access to the local hotspots.  With views of either the marina or the iconic Table Mountain, your room is a haven of luxury, with every modern amenity and convenience.  The hotel is situated close to the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront; ideal for those looking for mementoes for those back home.

You will be taken to Table Mountain, where a rotating gondola glides up the mountainside cable car – a panoramic trip, to be sure.  From these heights, Robben Island is visible in the middle of the bay, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for many years.

You will have the opportunity to don snorkelling gear and dive in the chill Atlantic amid a colony of curious Cape Fur Seals.

Or, let your inner adrenaline-junkie out to play, heading out to the beach dunes to learn sand-boarding (or bum-boarding, for those whose balance is a little shaky).  Not enough?  How about taking off on an offroad quad bike adventure, twisting through the dunes and racing Dad to the top!

A visit to the Old Malay Quarter, now known as Bo-Kaap, will be memorable for both the colorfully painted houses which celebrate the emancipation of slaves, and the absolutely delectable offerings at the legendary Kombuis Restaurant.

Rounding off your final day, we’ll take you sailing on a half-day charter, where tasty canapes, bubbly and the chant of gulls combine in celebration of an unforgettable vacation.

After dinner at the hotel’s vibrant restaurant, slip between the luxuriant linens, and drift off grateful for the time together as a family, for time together in Africa.
